The firm originally known as Gibson Bauer Associates was founded in 1975. Its early work consisted of architectural, master planning and historic preservation commissions for the Delaware & Raritan Canal Commission, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.
In 1987, the firm merged with two other firms creating Ryan Gibson Bauer Kornblath, P.A. (RGBK). Its offices were located at the World Trade Center, NY with clients such as the Port Authority of NY/NJ and Merrill Lynch.
In 1992, David Gibson reincorporated to form DF Gibson Architects, P.C. The firm relocated to Newark, NJ, where it focused on higher education, K-12 and preservation.
The firm relocated again in 2006, to midtown Manhattan in an office with a capacity of 25.
