Newark Penn Station

Description
Pennsylvania Railroad Newark Station is one of the last major works of McKim, Mead & White. The complex is the major intermodal transportation facility of Newark that connects the city regionally. It is located between the Ironbound and CBD districts, close to McCarter Highway that parallels the elevated train tracks. The complex consists of concourses, train sheds and a main Waiting Room. The main facade fronting Raymond Blvd. bears witness to an evolution of the Beaux-Arts formula that characterized this architectural firm into a more Moderne, yet still classical paradigm loaded with Art Deco decorations. This facade is dressed in Indiana limestone and maintains a tripartite configuration of base, body and cap. The entrances are articulated with colossal arches of rubbed pink granite with semi-circular profiles crowned by a stylized pediment. The spandrels for these arches and the pediments are decorated with carvings.
