Condition History

The City Hospital in Newark opened in 1882, and initially used the North wing of the Almshouse, located on the corner of Elizabeth Ave. and Concord St. In 1884, the hospital moved to the former Insane Asylum on Fairmount Ave. In the late 1880's, this structure was torn down and replaced with a red brick building. In 1925, the North wing was added. At this point the hospital was four stories and included a central building, two wings, a solaria, and the north wing. In 1954, construction began on a new hospital building, located behind the old hospital facing Bergen St. This building was completed in 1958 and named the Harrison S. Martland Medical Center, and today is known as University Hospital. The City Hospital was later demolished.
