Description
Dock Bridge connecting Newark with Harrison is an important segment of the North East Rail Road corridor. Its structure consists of a pair of through-truss lift bridges crossing the Passaic River at Newark, used exclusively for railroad traffic. The bridge was constructed in 1935 by Consulting Engineers Waddell & Hardestry after the patent of Dr. J. A. L. Waddell. The bridge was built for Pennsylvania Railroad in collaboration with the railroad's Chief Engineer T.W. Pinard. Dock Bridge is the only vertical lift bridge on the Northeast Corridor railroad route. Its structure is unique due to the operation of six tracks on three bridges with two lift spans.
